A Juxtaposition, Circa 1980
"In 1980 I took a road trip from Chicago to DC. I wanted to view and connect to the history of America through the many statues and memorials that made up the National Mall.
I was struck by the image of a man sweeping the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and how special it was that this country provided so many opportunities for so many people with so many diverse backgrounds.
I revisited this photo in 2019 and now have a heavy heart as I think back to my thoughts on that day and my thoughts on the recent events that seem to taint the famous Lincoln quote, ""With malice toward none."""
